Hawaii :)

The food topic that I chose is Hawaii. I chose Hawaii because I have family that lives there, and my aunt, who is Hawaiian, makes the best spring rolls ever and I really needed another excuse to eat them. Hawaii, although a U.S. state, has very different food than the rest of the country. The reasons are pretty obvious in the fact that not only is Hawaii very far from the rest of the country, but it was also home to a totally different group of people before we came and took it. Popular foods in Hawaii are what you would imagine: coconuts, mahi mahi, shrimp, and many other seafood/tropical foods. This is obviously because they have warm weather and water all around them, making these foods rather abundant. Pineapples also became huge for the economy of Hawaii when the U.S. men came over and started up Dole, a company famous for pineapples. Dole, to this day, is a very profitable company, and it started in Hawaii when we took it over. Meat isn't to vital in the food culture because meat, like pigs and cows, didn't come until the white men brought them to the remote island. That doesn't mean they don't have meat though. They have pig roasts where they cook the pig over a fire on a stick. They also love prepackaged spam. Hawaii produces the most spam per capita in the U.S., giving it the nickname, "The Hawaiian Steak." It sounds gross to me, but I won't judge. As a whole I really enjoy the Hawaiian food and think it's a very neat culture.
