Oh Pineapples

Oh Pineapples

Well you see, pineapples are a very integral part of Hawaiian food. Hawaiians used to call pineapples "halakahiki" because they were choking when they named it. No they didn't that was a joke, they called it that because it meant "foreign fruit." Pineapples were originally from South America, but as more and more people migrated to Hawaii in the early 1800's it became more abundant and more profitable. As businesses grew, the demand for labor grew and many people from Asia came over to help meet the demand in workers, hence the large amount of people of Asian decent in the state. In the late 1800's and early 1900's pineapple productions completely boomed with James Dole coming over and establishing Dole Food Company. Hawaii, with it's year-long tropical climate and great soil, was perfect for the production of pineapples. Hawaii produces about 1/3rd of the worlds pineapples and the state economy brings in about $3 billion a year from pineapples. Not to mention it employs over 40,000 people. Pineapples aren't only good for the economy, they're good for you! :) With no fat or cholesterol, low sodium, and a high source of Vitamin C, your body will thank you for choosing pineapples. Pineapples are used in many plates of Hawaiian food. Pineapples can be used in sauces, salsas, wines, and are even used in medicine to help induce menstruation, believe it or not. Whether its food, medical, or even economics, pineapples are always here to help.

  1. Like Hawaiian pineapples, Poland serves a traditional dish called Bigos, which is very high in nutrients to help people get there daily sources of vitamins. I had no idea that pineapple is used in medicine to help women menstruate..... that was something new to me. Just like the pineapple, pierogis in Poland are extremely popular and are one of the national foods. Pineapple is one of my favorite fruits and i actually wasn't sure if it originated in Hawaii or south america. I think it's really cool how food travels over time. It's because the people in the past created our future with different and great tasting foods.
