Hawaii Wedding

There are many people that live in Hawaii, 4 of which are my cousins. They celebrate most normal holidays, but one cool celebration is weddings. Because Hawaii has pacific islander roots, they have similar traditions as Asians. I personally witnessed my aunt and uncles wedding and they had dragons and all that jazz. It was very different, but very neat at the same time, which made it that much more fun. Everyone wore leis, and the bride and groom wear very fancy leis that they exchange at the beginning of the ceremony. Before the couple recites their vows, the "Hawaii Wedding Song" plays. A very beautiful, calming hymn I must say. Lots of Ukelele is played throughout the ceremony. The ukelele is obviously very important to the Hawaiians, and is their most notable music instrument. The reception was where the real magic happened, with the dragon and all, but as a whole it was a very neat, different wedding. They served mahi mahi at the reception, a dish I have talked about in my previous blog. It, along with the pineapple and rice, were absolutely delicious. The dragon later gave out fortune cookies, a little more Asian tradition, but nonetheless great.

  1. Thanks for sharing about your family, Jack! It was super interesting, especially since you had a first hand story from a wedding you were at! It sounds like weddings in Hawaii are the perfect set up. The food you mentioned sounds delicious! Although it seems a little strange to me that you would mix pineapple and rice, I would still give it a shot. I think it is super cool that at the wedding everyone receives the leis. I know that my friend can play the ukulele and it is very calming and peaceful when she plays. I can only imagine how awesome it would be to be listening to someone play it on the beach during a sunset. It was awesome to learn more about the Hawaiian culture.
