I have decided to focus on the culture
of France for this project. I don’t have much prior knowledge of French
cuisine, but with more research, I am hoping to learn more about the history of
it. I am also interested to see how it has progressed since then. The reason
that I am want to learn more about the French culture is because during my
freshman and sophomore year I took French as my language course. Something I
learned from my teacher Mr. Recchia, is that the most important meal in France
is lunch, because of that, a typical lunch break in France can last up to two
hours. The reason that the lunch break is so long, is because French people
treat eating with respect, and enjoy it a lot. Another interesting fact about France,
is that they consume the most cheese out of any other country in the world.
Geography also plays an important role on French cuisine. France is
surrounded by Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and the UK; all
these countries have an influence of the history of French food. For example,
Italy influenced the French cuisine when Catherine de Médicis married Henry the II of France. When they got married Catherine brought her Italian chefs over from
Italy, in doing such a small thing, they advanced the culinary arts of French cuisine.
