“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to
have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.” –Goethe As Goethe, the famous German poet states, in
order to truly experience what Italy has
to offer, it is important that you visit Sicily. Sicily is the biggest Island
located just off the southern coast of Italy separated from the mainland by the
Strait of Messina. Surrounded by the sea, Sicily has, in a way, become an culture
independent from the mainland. As many know, Sicily is known for it’s food,
which range from grilled swordfish to the smaller cannolis filled with sugar. The
Sicilian culture was the perfect choice for me because it is my belief that the
best food in the world originates in Sicily. You can’t go wrong with Sicilian artichokes,
pistachio pesto, and cassata. Some also believe that spaghetti was invented in
Sicily. This spaghetti differs from the spaghetti discovered in China by Marco
Polo in that it consisted of hard wheat, water, and salt, rather than rice
flour. Although Sicily may have not invented spaghetti, they are credited with
the first industrial production of pasta. Food isn't the only thing that intrigued
me to Sicily; it is home the largest active volcano in Europe, and is covered
is ancient Greek architecture from border to border.
