1)
- The theme could control and dictatorship from Mama Elena.
- Esquivel tries to demonstrate how strict the home really is.
- "You know perfectly well that being my youngest daughter means that you have to take care of me until the day I die." This quote limites any change and doesn't let anyone have their personal freedom.

2)
- Pedro is marrying Rosaura half-heartidly. He really doesnt care about her.
- Pedro is the one rebelling even more because he actually made a matrimony commitment and Tita is just off to the sidelines hiding her thoughts and emotions despite how she feels.
- Tita rebels by being in love with a married man.
