Spain
is known for their “fiestas” otherwise known as parties. They often have
festivals, parties, celebrations and parades honoring saints and holidays. One
of the most known national holidays is the national Hispanic Day (Dia de la
Hispanidad.) This holiday is a day of celebration hosted on October 12th
every year; the Spanish people celebrate when Christopher Columbus set foot in
the Americas in 1492. This day is also affiliated with the church. It is a remembrance
of great saints. On this day, the Spanish flag rises in the center of the town of
Madrid and it is followed by a festive parade and an Air Show. Representatives
from the Spanish military come in to walk in the parade. Businesses, shops, restaurants
and stores spend weeks preparing their items to be bought and sold at this event.
And it is a time that radio, TV, and internet all stream live throughout the
course of the day. After the parade is over, the city celebrates with their
favorite food. Tortilla de Patatas (Spanish omelet), Spanish Tapas, Paeilla,
and Sangaria are common dishes and drinks that are used to help celebrate this
day. I really enjoyed learning more about what the Spanish culture believes in
and what they celebrate. I found it interesting that most of their holidays are
correlated with the Catholic Church!
The website listed above gives reciepes for Tortilla de
Patatas (Spanish omelet), Spanish Tapas, Paeilla, and Sangaria.
